Hi Everyone,
I'm new here, but feel quite at home with all your clown-haters. I can't say I HATE clown, but I truly DISLIKE them with a PASSION. I don't know when or where my dislike for them started, but when I see one, I have to walk away or turn the channel... whatever...
I'm 40 years old and my family and friends know how much I truly dislike clowns but they taunt me with the fear! My husband is the worst too. Mind you it's all in fun, but I'm not thrilled when they do it. My husband will be watching TV and surfing the channels and if he sees a clown, he will PURPOSELY call me into the room to see it! One time when we were on vacation in Block Island, RI on 4th of July, we got there too late to see the parade. It had ended maybe 10 - 15 minutes before got there, anyway, we were walking around looking at the Island and the stores. Well my husband spotted something he just had to have me see! He ran up to me and said,"You have GOT to come see this!" He told me to walk ahead of him and as I did, and thru the alley way, there they were! FIVE OR SIX of them (who had time to count or wanted to count!) Five or six freakin clowns sitting at a table eating ice cream!!!! OMG... I turned to my husband and I called him a few choice words I cannot type here! He just laughed at the expression on my face!
My brother kiddingly told me at a party where there was a clown that he was going to tell my son (who is 9yrs old and also afraid of clowns.. thanks to me!) and my husband to leave one day and that he was going to send 10 clowns to ring my doorbell and "surprise" me! Give me a heart attack is MORE like it.! Still after all these years he's still teasing me! He's 44 ... I'm 40!
And to end this post, my friends know I hate clowns too... so when I turned down an invite to take my son to the circus, they called me while they were there and had the clown TALK to me on their cell phone! I need to get new friends, what do you think! Geeeeez!!!
So the moral of this whole post is... watch who you tell that you hate clowns!

I know what you mean. My colleagues, knowing of my coulrophobia, always save all the clown images they find in newspapers or elsewhere, and they display them on my desk on monday mornings; what a lousy way to start a week! They even stole a menu from the infamous Clown Bar in Paris and taped it on the wall of my office. :x

Ah yes. Many friends of mine have enjoyed watching me freak out around clowns. I recently went to a Halloween Haunted Mill and my friends neglected to tell me that there was a six foot clown running around inside with fangs that went on for days.
Yes, well, I got through the mill, having the best time! Creatures came out of no where and made me jump here and there, but I do enjoy a good scare.
Yes, well I crawled through their small maze and found myself alone. I just thought my goofball friends couldn't find there way through the dark and I would have to wait for them.
Suddenly something came up behind me and grabbed me. I jumped then started to laugh thinking it was a vampire or something.
I turned and saw this horrible clown. Just then the house lights went on and this evil looking thing came at me. I started screaming falling backwards on the floor.
I must have scared the living hell out of the guy in the clown suit, because he started backing away.
I could hear my friends laughing, as they made it through the maze. They urged the clown to go near me and he walked closer to me, only to move away hearing me scream.
Finally the clown got the nerve to come forward, I assume to try to help me off the ground and I started to cry. (Yep, I did)
My friends pretty much kept on laughing even after I scrambled away from them and the clown.
Needless to say I was not happy. They found their own way home that night.

I don't have much of a problem with this anymore since I got to the point where taunting me with clowns became grounds for booting someone the hell out of my life.
In the past I had 'friends' who liked to torment me about it, though.

There is nothing wrong with you. You have something that others in this world lack. You see evil. You see right through their giggling innocent visage and see the demon within.
One day, the rest of the world will see clowns the way we see them.
They are children of the devil..and together we wil smite them down and send them back ito the fiery pits of hell where they came from.
D!e you red-nosed sons of Satan!!

Telling people about my abhorrence for clowns is never a problem because I can persuade them to see my view or they are just intimidated by me and agree. Whichever the case, I find fear repulsive, but loathing is quite acceptable, even honorable.

I tend to characterize my reaction as "aversion", where I avoid clown-related situations, and do not like being around such things - I can watch some things, especially if they're intended to be scary, like the movie IT, which I thought was well done all around, by everyone, plus it has 80s actors, which makes it nostalgic for me. But being AROUND clowns... it puts me severely on edge and I'm already someone who doesn't like my space invaded - but clowns - no way!

Great to know i'm not the only "freak" afraid of clowns. My friends my boyfriend and I went to our county fair, and there's usually never any clowns there, but this time there was and i was trying to avoid it so hard, until it started to yell out my name. Not only did it give me flash backs from when i was 5 but i cried and ran away. Great. If i had enough courage to walk up to a clown, I would have punched it in the face.

How did this particular clown know your name? A cruelty inflicted by "friends" or a prior engagement involving the clown?
rainbowtheclown

most likely cruelty inflicted by friends - many clowns i know are aware of this and will not abide it - they kick the "friends" butt - sorry this did not happen with the above poster - that is unacceptable - most clowns are in fact ignorant dumb@<hidden>#$'s

I think that the amount of people being scared by clowns is growing and the number of "scary" clowns featured in commercials are playing into these fears. Even in a Christmas commercial I saw a clown with sharp teeth, red eyes and labled a "Scary Clown".
I don't know if it is because of movies like "IT" or "Attack of the Clowns" but I hate having to turn my head from a stupid commercial that you never know is coming!

So, I'm new here. Let me start by saying that I am not afraid of clowns, I simply hate them. And here is my story, in poem form!
'Twas a hot summer day, in 2010,
When I saw a group of clowns.
My friends all boo'd, but I stood up for them,
None had ever let me down.
He was passing out balloons...
And I was real excited.
I ran over to him... more than just delighted.
For I had never had an animal-balloon,
But those unhappy days would be over soon.
I asked with a huge smile on my face,
"Can I have a balloon?!"
And with tears of joy in my eyes,
My heart began to race.
And that clown, I'll tell you what he did.
He walked my way...
But then he turned away,
And yelled "The balloons are for the kids!"
Broken-hearted...
He smiled at me. Walked away.
Proceeded to make many children temporarily satisfied.
I saw the gleam in their eyes...
And then I saw it fade.
Uninterested in their balloons, they watched the last of the parade.
And I watched them, in their youth.
Unappreciative.
And I broke down and cried at what I could not relive.
I never had before, but now I could never more
Than I do now-
Hate clowns.

I have really great friends and family who really try to protect me from my phobia. They know it's serious and not just some joke. They've seen me in tears and see how serious i am when there's one around. They know that if they set me up to be freaked out by a clown that the clown will pay. It's never happened but I know I wouldn't think twice about punching one that came up to me with a purpose.
There's always the occasional co-worker though that doesn't get it.
