I think i read this in britannica:

Clowns started in barbaric times in England. whenever there was a war that they won, they would rip the skin off victims and parade around town wearing their skin and acting stupid. The "red nose" started cause it was especially hard to rip the skin off of the nose so they just left a bloody hole there. Apparantly, certain liked this blood bath enough to keep it alive. though this time with paints.
