Do mimes qualify as clowns? Or are they...something else? Well, either way, I'm happy that their at least quiet as compared to clowns, however distant the relationship may be

Mimes are just as bad, maybe even worse, cause you can't hear them coming. Mimes use the same basic ingredients clowns use to be 'funny'. They wear greasepaint, act silly and usually pick out the younger children as a 'volunteer' for some stupid act. Although being a good mime requires just a little more intelligence than being a clown, they're still dumb, lazy drunks. Simply cause you can't make any money as a mime (or at least not enough to stay alive) and thus they will end up in the gutter.

Speaking of mimes. I was watching an episode of "RENO911" on Comedy Central. A mime was mimicking and harassing officer Garcia, so he whipped out his knight stick, and beat the piss out of the freakish pale mute (can I say piss?). I'm telling you, the people have spoken, clowns (and their silent cousins) have become a symbol of forboding in this world, they will be tolerated no longer.
It's already happening, look at McDonalds, led by the infamous Ronald McDonald. McDonalds is the company that pools all the funding for clowns. How else would they afford face paint and balloons? Obviously not from birthday parties and gigs at nursing homes.
McDonalds posted it's first loss in the stock market several months ago. And since then they've been going downhill. No longer will they make our children fat, and make them cry at birthday parties. No longer will they fund their sinister operation with "double cheese burgers," and "chicken mcnugget happy meals," The Clown Empire shall fall at last!

Sorry. I've been annoyed by mimes so much they've made me go nuts. I guess I just can't stand anything with greasepaint on their faces. :(

Mime artists, jesters, certain pantomime characters, puppeteers - anything like that is a "clown" - in the oldest (historical) sense of the word. There to "entertain" (or merely annoy, or in my case, torment). But the specific combination of white face paint and red mouth gives me the willies. Shudder.
Do masks spook any of you? I'm not too scared of masks - just clowns. And other assorted people in white face paint.

Anything that hides their real identity. I mean, look at the KKK, they wear masks just cause they're too chickenshit to show their faces. Same with clowns and mimes. But are they ashamed? Is it because else they might be recognised cause they were on America's Most Wanted last night? Who will tell?

That's it! But cloth, wood or plastic masks are a bit different because they also hide the features of a face. Facepaint can mask or enhance certain features. I reckon that clowns etc. are scary because they are human, but only appear human-like on account of the make-up. But they have a demonic quality due to their expressions being fixed (in face paint). I mean, they can be making any expresison, but it always looks like an hysterical grin. I'm convinced it's the fixedness of expression that's sppoky. I wonder if some people are afraid of monkeys for a similar reason. I'm not scared of monkeys, however. Unless they're wearing facepaint. OBVIOUSLY.
Black and white minstrels? A bit dated now, but still relevant in the whole mask-facepaint-hiding identity debate.

I saw a monkey with an organ grinder in France when I was a kid. Both were dressed as clowns. Narst.

I'm not scared of mimes. I never actually been close to one either.
Maybe it's because they look so idiotic with their invisible boxes. :D

I can't say i've ever had any beef with Mimes, but i've never had a bad experience with any. I'm not saying I like them though, just know very little about them.
Mimes must be like the Bees, you'll maybe get stung once or twice in a lifetime unless you're really unlucky. Where as Clowns are the Wasps, the meaner cousins that sting on each chance they're given!
